My eyes float over to Hanna even as distraction tugs at my brain. Her cheeks are flushed to match the tint of her lips, that soft cherry pink like the ripest fruit waiting to be plucked. I want her again already, but I know what she just said is right.

We better blow this town, and fast.

I can already pick up the sound of sirens in the distance, and I know it’s not just my paranoid ears playing tricks on me.

Time to move.

Hannah is already sitting in the passenger’s seat by the time I slide into the driver’s side. The engine growls to life again, but I still need a minute to figure out our next move. Whether or not the authorities are looking for a car like mine isn’t clear yet. Like every part of my life back in Redwind Gulch, the acquisition of the Mustang was done off the books. I’ve lived my life on the outskirts for so long, I’m nearly curious to see what they know about me.

But I know there’s a chance Hannah hasn’t been as covert. Hooking up with a drug dealer didn’t mean she was anonymous. Just like Max, there are probably plenty of people that could identify her in a line up.

I punch the gas, dirt flying up around the tires as I drive us away from the clearing. Branches scrape over the car again, warning us not to leave, but we don’t have the luxury of listening.

Back out on the highway, we fall back into undefined territory. Despite my raised heart rate, no one gives us a second look. We turn into just any other traveling couple, any other car out on the road. For a second, I let myself believe we’re actually headed to get her mother’s blessing for us to get married.

“What?” Hannah turns from the window and looks at me.

“Huh?”

“You laughed,” she tells me. “So what’s so funny?”

Shit.

“Nothing,” I say. “I was just thinking about asking you to marry me.”

She folds her arms across her chest, pushing the swell of her tits into better view in a way that holds my gaze for dangerously long. “And that was funny to you?”

I raise an eyebrow. “A little.”

Her hand flies across the car to smack me on the arm, but the move is playful. I grin at her while she pretends to pout.

She has to know how batshit insane the past forty-eight hours have been for us. Come to think of it, in that context, maybe asking her to marry me isn’t so crazy. It would just be following a natural progression of insanity.

“We’re gonna have to get off the road soon,” I say. We’ve been driving away from the desert for hours now, and the terrain outside is changing. Mountains loom into view, covered in green-tipped trees, and the air feels different.

I know like everything else, I’m just going to have to trust my gut, so I make a best guess, and turn off the highway. A small traveler’s motel
